Mercedes Unimog 4x4 Lift Roof Expedition Camper

The Mercedes-Benz Unimog 4×4 Lift Roof Expedition Camper is designed for travellers who demand exceptional off-road capability without compromising comfort once camp is established. Built in Australia on the legendary Mercedes-Benz Unimog platform, this expedition vehicle combines world-renowned all-terrain performance with a premium German-engineered lift-roof system, making it ideal for extended remote travel throughout Australia and around the world.

Featuring a fully German-engineered lift-roof system, every All Terrain Expedition Camper Truck build combines proven international engineering with Australian craftsmanship to deliver a premium expedition vehicle for serious overland travellers. By integrating internationally proven lift-roof technology into our Australian-built expedition camper bodies, we provide customers with a unique combination of advanced engineering, quality construction and fully customised design that hasn’t been seen before in Australia.

Designed for Serious Overland Travel

Engineered specifically for demanding expedition use, the lift-roof system provides a durable, weather-resistant solution designed to perform across a wide range of climates and environments all year round. The full lift-roof design transforms the entire upper level into a spacious living area, offering generous sleeping quarters, practical storage, excellent ventilation, panoramic views and an opening skylight that allows you to enjoy the night sky from the comfort of your camper.

Unlike traditional pop-top tent sleeping extensions that simply add an elevated sleeping platform above the living area, our full lift-roof design creates a functional upper living space that enhances comfort, usability and liveability during extended off-grid travel. The result is a versatile expedition camper that remains compact while travelling yet provides the interior space expected from a premium overland vehicle once camp is established.

Every build is custom designed around the owner’s travel plans, whether exploring remote deserts, mountain tracks or international overland routes. Interior layouts, power systems, water storage, cabinetry and equipment are all tailored to suit individual requirements, with both left-hand and right-hand drive configurations available.

How the Lift Roof Works on the Unimog 4x4

The lift-roof design offers the versatility of two vehicle profiles in one. When travelling, the lowered roof reduces the overall vehicle height, making it easier to navigate tree-lined tracks, low-clearance obstacles and transport requirements. Once at camp, the roof is raised to create a spacious interior with full standing height throughout the living area.

For many expedition travellers, this combination provides an excellent balance between driving practicality and comfortable long-term living. It allows the vehicle to remain compact while travelling without compromising the internal space required for extended off-grid adventures.

This dual-height design is what makes the Unimog 4×4 Lift Roof so versatile. You get a comfortable, walk-around living space when you’re parked up for the night, without sacrificing the lower centre of gravity needed for tackling rough terrain, steep tracks, and tight trails during the day.

What the lift roof gives you:

  • More internal headroom when parked
  • More usable living space for extended stays
  • Lower profile while driving for better stability on rough tracks
  • German-designed for long-term reliability in remote conditions
  • A practical interior without compromising on-road performance

Is the Lift Roof Right for You?

The Unimog Lift Roof is well suited to travellers looking for maximum off-road capability while maintaining a compact travelling profile. It is particularly popular with couples and long-term adventurers who regularly encounter narrow bush tracks, low-hanging vegetation, ferry height restrictions or shipping containers where overall vehicle height can be an important consideration.

Like every one of our expedition camper trucks, each build is fully customised to suit your preferred travel style, whether that's weekend touring, full-time overlanding or international expedition travel.

Built for Extended Off-Grid Travel

Beyond the capability of the Unimog chassis itself, every expedition camper is designed to operate independently for extended periods. Battery storage, solar charging, water capacity, heating, air conditioning, recovery equipment and interior layouts can all be configured to suit the destinations you intend to explore.

Every component is selected with reliability, serviceability and long-term expedition use in mind, creating a vehicle capable of travelling well beyond conventional camping destinations.

Why the Unimog 4x4 performs where other expedition trucks cannot

Portal Axles for Extreme Ground Clearance

Portal axles raise the drivetrain above the wheel centreline, giving the Unimog clearance no standard 4×4 can match, without lifting the chassis.

Constant AWD With Diff Locks on All Axles

Full traction in the worst conditions, standard. No manual switching. Differential locks across all axles mean you stay moving where others get stuck.

Up to 1,200 Nm Torque Under Full Load

An expedition camper is heavy. The Unimog’s torque output is built for loaded operation across steep, loose, and uneven terrain without strain.

Up to 250 L Fuel Range

Extended range without resupply. Critical for remote travel in Australia and long overland routes where fuel stops are far apart or unreliable.

Pneumatic Disc Brakes

More consistent and reliable than hydraulic systems in extreme conditions, high altitude, and temperature changes encountered on remote expedition routes.

Euro VI Compliant Engine

Meets emissions standards across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Reduces import and registration complexity for international buyers.
